Build a Backyard Chicken Coop

Some reasons why you should consider building your own backyard chicken coop.

If you have enough space in your backyard, you may want to consider raising chickens as pets. Seriously, backyard chicken raising is a rewarding hobby and very cost-effective because not only does the venture provide you with months (even years of enjoyment) chickens are an important food source – chicken meat and eggs! Compared to other regular pets like dogs and cats, raising chicken is a lot cheaper because they actually pay for themselves.

Granted that the initial cost of buying chicks, chicken feed and building a chicken coop would set you back a few dollars, the long run advantage of having fresh eggs and chicken meat on a regular basis far outweighs costs the initial investment.

Chicken is a major source of protein and healthful eggs. Medical health practitioners and researchers acknowledge that organic chicken eggs from backyard chickens have by far better quality and are more beneficial compared to the chicken eggs available from the supermarket. Home-produced eggs are healthier than commercially produced eggs from the supermarket because they contain higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E and have significantly lower levels of cholesterol.

Another advantage of building a chicken coop in your backyard is that chickens do not require as much attention compared to other pets or animals. Although they require feeding and watering on a daily basis, they do not have need of walking or grooming. Regular cleaning of chicken coops is only essential on a weekly or monthly basis but then this depends on the number of chickens you have in the coops.

Another green benefit of raising chickens in your backyard is that they do double duty as a natural, chemical-free, pest and bug control animal. If you are not aware of it yet, chickens love to eat bugs, mosquitoes, ticks and the number one curse of most plants - slugs! Furthermore, your flock of feathered pest control specialists will also provide the best natural-fertilizer for your garden and plants! Chicken dropping is one of the best naturally-produced fertilizers available.

And as an added bonus, chickens are great pets and provide you and your family with endless hours of enjoyment as they wander in the backyard or inside their coops!
