Build A Modern Backyard Chicken Coop
Build A Modern Backyard Chicken Coop
If you’re on the lookout for a backyard coop to raise chickens or other birds, you’ll find that there are plenty of options available online. In fact, definitely the cheapest way to get a good quality chicken coop is to build your own. It doesn’t take much handywork, and you can get detailed plans for all different shapes and sizes immediately off the internet.
If you think building a chicken coop is right for you, there are a few things you first need to consider. For starters, how big of a backyard coop do you need? There are pretty much 3 options available here: small/portable, medium, and large/premium. If you want to keep more than 3 chickens you’re best to go with a medium coop, perhaps adding some extra running space if you want to see optimal egg yields.
A homemade chicken coop, whatever the size may be, is essentially built from wire mesh and some light, treated pine. Some online building plans will suggest other types of wood, but pine is definitely the least expensive. The backyard coop is separated into 3 areas: the run, the perches, and the feeding area.
The Run
Most chicken breeds will yield up to 5 eggs a week in optimal conditions. This means a stress free environment with adequate space to run. A chicken run is mostly made of wire mesh.
The Perches/Nests
You can build nests from cardboard boxes and some straw if you want to go really cheap. Your coop should include some kind of sheltered area to keep the nests dry.
The Feeding/Drinking Area
This is typically located within the running space. The best backyard coop building plans will show you how to build this area so it’s easy to clean and take in and out food and water.
