How to Construct a Chicken Coop

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Raising   can be a fun and rewarding hobby. It is a hobby, which if done properly, will pay for itself in a very short time. Chickens are not difficult to raise, however, they do have some requirements to keep them happy and healthy. One of those requirements is a chicken coop; in this article, we will look at how to construct a chicken coop.

The location of your chicken coop is the first decision that you have to make. When you choose the site for your chicken coop, it should be flat yet high enough for proper water drainage. The area that you select will also need to be flat enough to connect a chicken yard.

When you construct a chicken coop, it is a good idea to do a little pre-shopping for materials so that you can get the most for your money. This list of materials will enable you to build an 8-foot wide by 8 foot long by 4-foot high chicken coop.
For this project, you will need:
25- 2×4x8 for the frame construction (2 of the 2×4’s will be used for the perch).

3- 2×2x8 for the perch.
2- ½” 4×8 sheets of plywood for the roof.
5- ¼” 4×8 sheets of plywood for the walls, one of the sheets will be used to construct you are laying boxes.
3lbs of brass screws for construction, brass screws do not rust.

When you build your chicken coop, simply frame it up as you would a small shed. The nice thing about this design is that you can build your chicken yard, directly off the coop its self. This is one way how to construct a chicken coop. another benefit is that it has no floor, so it will be easier to clean.

Wooden Chicken Coops

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Chicken coops come in all shapes and sizes these days, and are made of various materials, including metal and plastic. My favorite, however, is the old standby… wood. A wooden coop is cooler than plastic or metal in the summer, and it’s warmer in the winter.

It’s also easier to customize when you want to add windows, put in a pop hole, or expand. And because you can use scrap materials, it can be substantially cheaper than a pre-built coop.

Another advantage of a wooden coop is that it’s easy to dress up or down, as the mood strikes you. Your chickens won’t care one way or another, but it’s fun to paint the coop with bright colors, sunflowers, or a fanciful motif. You can find lots of fun examples if Google “chicken coop pictures.”

Plus, wooden coops are easy to build if you know how to use some basic tools, like a hammer, a saw, and a drill. Just make sure that you have a great set of plans to follow! Building a coop seems like such a simple project until you start factoring in the need for ventilation, nest boxes, roost space, cleaning, egg gathering, and predator protection. Many books offer tons of flat drawings and color pictures, but they assume you know what you’re doing and can intuitively build what you see. What you really need, if you’re a novice carpenter like me, are plans that provide accurate measurements, step-by-step instructions, and 3D diagrams.

So why struggle to come up with a workable coop design? Buy the best book on chicken coop building you can find and bypass all the potential mistakes and rework.

How To Build A Chicken Coop

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Several years ago, my partner and I attempted chicken (and rooster) ownership for the first time. While we thought we were excited about our small step towards the self-sustainability we desire, our children were so thrilled they offered to help with chores for the first time in years.

We thought we were set. Chicken-wire enclosed a sturdy frame that we, all too soon, found was not sufficient here in Texas. One morning my daughter came into the house crying and led us out to see a horrible sight.I’ll spare you the gory details, but suffice it to say that we realized right then and there that our homemade construction had not protected our little friends from the coyotes we hear from time to time at night. We were not oblivious to the dangers coyotes posed to our small farm setting, but we had no idea our pen would not provide enough protection.

It’s been years since then, and my older children have not forgotten that experience. My husband and I have refused to try raising chickens again until we were prepared to do it the right way. We’re excited we found "How to Build a Chicken Coop."

We love allowing chickens to roam in the daytime hours when we feel it’s safe, but now we have the means to protect them at night. After years of composting, growing our own veggies, and learning how to save rainwater to water them, chicken ownership was the natural next step, and the fresh eggs are wonderful!
