Way To Build A Chicken Coop At Home
If you’re a bit strapped for time and money, you’ll be glad to hear that it’s quite simple to build a chicken coop in only a few hours. All you need to do is download the building schematics, go down to the local hardware store for some wood, nails and wire mesh, and spend the afternoon getting things together. This article helps you get the ball rolling, and shows you where to download quality chicken coop plans online.
Before You Begin
If you want to build a chicken coop fast, you need to make sure you’ve thought out the size and position. If you’re just starting out raising chickens, you’re most likely underestimating the size you need. Even though you’ve only got a couple of chickens now, the number will probably double within a year.
The basic sizes are:
Small & Portable - This is your basic three-sided prism type coop. This will only take an hour or 2 to build. I don’t recommend small coops as a permanent chicken house, as it will generally stress the birds out and lead to low egg yields.
Medium coops - This is basically a box shaped coop with a small nesting area to one side. It’s good because the chickens have some running space. The only problem is that it’s not easy to move around.
Premium coops - This one is generally quite large, and will include an open “run”. A run is just a dedicated area where your birds can get some exercise. You pretty much can’t move a premium coop once it’s set up without taking out some nails. However, if you want to keep more than 10 chickens this size is a MUST!
